Underneath is a quite accurate self developed estimate of the number of currently active domainnames: at this moment about 176 mln domainnames in the world, from .com to .cn.

At least 50% of these domainnames are parked/ unused. They are mainly bought to prevent others from buying them, or in the hope others will buy them. As the average registration price per year for these domains will exceed US$ 10 per year the total spending for the 88 mln non used domains will be at least 880 mln US$. Enough to feed 1 mln people for a year in Africa...
